Coming from an education background as a qualified nursery and primary school teacher (BA Hons Education) I was thrilled to discover the fun and excitement of baby signing. I was a little surprised at how incredibly easy it was. Babies are communicators from birth. Your little one will start to use many gestures as part of their natural speech and language development. Teaching your baby just a few extra signs can really help them to communicate with you. Not just their needs but their thoughts and feelings too. I started signing with my daughter, Amelia when she was six months old and I joined a Sing and Sign class when she was eight months old. She made her first signing attempts soon after we started the course and went on to learn and use many more. At first it was just so useful for her to be able to tell us when she was hungry, tired, wanted a drink or had a pain. There was very little frustration because she knew she could easily communicate her needs to us. It was so exciting for us as parents to understand what our very young daughter was thinking at such an early age. We could talk to her about her interests, we knew exactly what was happening in her world. She was able to tell us if she was looking for a specific toy, what she could see from the window or what she wanted to play with. All before she could speak. A very magical moment for me was when Amelia was about 10 months old and signed "Where's daddy?". I remember thinking, "Wow, this is amazing, she can't speak and yet she's asking questions and 'talking' in sentences. We found signing with Amelia hugely valuable when she was a young baby but also when she was older and starting to talk. As she started saying words we immediately knew what she was trying to say because of her sign. "de" we knew was Daddy for example rather than duck or dog because she was making the sign. She used to say the sound "ee" a lot and with her signs we knew if she was saying "tree", "bee", "Mummy" or her friend "Millie!" How fantastic this was for assigning meaning to her early speech and being able to talk with her knowing what she was thinking about and trying to say. We could understand even the very earliest speech sounds and repeat back to her clearly what it was she was trying to say. As she started to talk in sentences she would be able to "fill in" with signs and even made up many of her own signs to try and explain what she meant. We found that signing gave Amelia a huge amount of confidence when communicating and as such her speech has developed really well.
